Marion County commissioners OK pay hikes for firefighters and paramedics

Marion County commissioners unanimously approved a new pay deal for firefighters Tuesday morning.

The amended contract provides all current paramedics with an increase of $3.43 per hour, which equates to $10,284.86 more annually for dual-certified firefighter/paramedics and an additional $10,000.17 for single-certified paramedics.

Starting pay increases to $50,014.98 for firefighter/paramedics and $45,715.04 for single-certified paramedics, plus a transport stipend totaling $5,831 per year. Dual-certified paramedics also will make an extra $2 hourly stipend when working on a transport unit.
The union representing the firefighters already has approved the amended pay package, which goes into effect Oct. 1.

“Today’s vote marks a turning point for Marion County Fire Rescue,” said Kathy Bryant, commission chairman. “The board’s investment underscores a real commitment to recruiting and retaining the best paramedics in the state of Florida to ensure the best quality of emergency medical care is provided to all Marion County residents and visitors.”
