Juvenile charged with second degree murder in connection with shooting at Ocala apartment complex

Ocala Police officers have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with a Tuesday night shooting that left one man dead.

Officers responded to the Parkside Garden Apartments at 621 NW 2nd Street at 11:25 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls of shots being fired. When they arrived, they found 54-year-old Cornelius Lewis suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and life-threatening injuries. He was trauma alerted to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Detectives identified 17-year-old John Munroe as the suspected shooter but were unable to make contact with him at his residence. But Munroe came to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department to discuss the shooting, so Ocala detectives brought him to the police station for questioning.

Munroe told detectives that he shot Lewis but said it was in self-defense, an Ocala Police report states, adding that witness statements and video footage don’t support that claim.

Munroe was arrested and charged with second degree murder and possession of a firearm by a juvenile. He is being held with no bond.
