Belleview man jailed after woman reports threat ‘to cut her’ with box cutter

Jason Copeland

Marion County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Belleview man Sunday afternoon after a woman reported being threatened with a box cutter.

When deputies arrived at the house on SE 119th Street, the woman told them she and 40-year-old Jason Copeland were arguing when he pulled out a box cutter and allegedly threatened “to cut her” for looking through his phone. The woman said she was “afraid for her life” because she believed Copeland was serious about his threat, a sheriff’s office report states.

After a witness corroborated the woman’s story, deputies made contact with Copeland, who said the argument “was just verbal.” He wouldn’t give deputies a clear answer about threatening the woman with a box cutter, even though they gave him “multiple opportunities to tell his side of the story” before he became uncooperative, the report says.

Copeland was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. He was being held on $10,000 bond and is due to appear in a Marion County courtroom on Sept. 11 at 9 a.m.

Copeland has spent time in the Marion County Jail seven times since November 2010.
