Gunshot-like sounds reported on voicemail at Ocala elementary school

The school resource officer at Shady Hill Elementary School in Ocala was alerted Wednesday after a voicemail left at the school caught the attention of a receptionist.

The deputy assigned to the facility, which is located at 5959 S Magnolia Ave., listened to the voicemail, which came into the school’s phone system at 3:54 p.m. He reported hearing talking between a male and female, followed by a “a series of what appears to be gunshots” that lasted about a minute, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office report states, adding that the deputy was unable to make out what the two were talking about.

The deputy made a sergeant aware of the phone call and requested that the case be forwarded to a detective as a follow-up to possibly identify the caller or the phone number, the report says.
