Deputy confronts ‘disrespectful’ elementary student who pointed fingers like gun

An Ocala elementary school student found himself in the dean’s office Tuesday after pointing his fingers like a gun at another student in the breakfast line.

When confronted by the dean at Marion Oaks Elementary School and the facility’s resource officer, who is a Marion County sheriff’s deputy, the 10-year-old fifth-grader displayed “disrespectful behavior,” a sheriff’s office report states, adding that the student even attempted to walk out of the dean’s office several times.

A short time later, the deputy met with the boy a second time and found his attitude “more receptive.” He informed the boy of other alternatives that could be used to handle situations, such as telling his teacher when other students are bothering him “rather than acting out and taking the incident into his own hands,” the report says.

Administrators at the school, located at 280 Marion Oaks Trail in Ocala, handled disciplinary action against the student. And the deputy called the boy’s mother make her aware of the situation and let her know the school would need to speak with her.

The deputy also requested a patrol unit visit the student’s house to determine if any firearms are inside the home, and if so, to ensure they aren’t accessible by any juveniles, the report says.
