Black Friday is upon us. And that means thousands upon thousands of area residents will be hitting tri-county stores as they seek out those special Christmas deals over the next month.
But this also is the time of year when thieves are known to prey on shoppers. So it’s important to stay safe and plan ahead when shopping at area stores during the Christmas season.
With that in mind, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office is offering some tips shoppers might want to keep in mind to help stay safe:
- If at all possible, leave children at home. Being in large crowds puts your kids at risk for getting lost or kidnapped. Children tend to wander, so sometimes it’s just safer to leave them at home with someone you trust.
- Avoid taking a purse. If you can, put your ID, cash and credit cards in your front pockets. Avoid using back pockets for any items you have with you. And if you have to take a purse, consider a cross-body bag. It will make it more difficult for purse-snatchers to grab and run.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you have to bring your children with you, keep an eye on them and do not let them wander away.
- Park as close as you can to the store and in a well-lit area.
- Carry your keys in your hand, as they can be used as a weapon if needed.
- If you are going to different stores, do not leave packages in plain view in your vehicle. Put them and other valuables in the trunk. You might also want to consider re-parking on the other side of the shopping center before going into the store. It gives the appearance that you are leaving, just in case someone is watching you.
- Don’t be distracted by talking or texting on the phone while walking. This makes you an easy target.
- If you are taking a high-dollar purchase to your car, ask a store associate to walk with you, just in case someone is watching.
- If you see someone lurking around your car, hit the panic button on your key fob, go back into the store and call law enforcement.
- There is safety in numbers, so bring a friend along if possible.
- And always lock the doors on your vehicle.
