Citra man wanted on warrant faces drug charges after spitting out ‘ice’

Douglas Wayne Mason

A Citra man who had been picked up on an active warrant Thursday night made things worse for himself on the way to the Marion County Jail.

A sheriff’s deputy said he was driving 52-year-old Douglas Wayne Mason to the jail when he claimed to have dropped his false teeth on the floorboard of the patrol vehicle. A short time later, Mason stated that he “spit a bag of ice that was in his mouth on the floor.”

The deputy activated his body-worn camera and asked Mason what he had dropped on the floor. He said Mason was hesitant but then said he dropped his false teeth and a bag of “ice.” But he also accused the deputy of trying to set him up, a sheriff’s office report states.

When they arrived at the jail, the deputy removed Mason from his patrol vehicle and found his false teeth and a clear bag containing a crystal-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine, the report says, adding that the items were found on the floorboard area where Mason had been sitting.

Before entering the jail, Mason told the deputy that he had a syringe in his coat pocket. The deputy allowed Mason to turn the syringe over to him and then took him inside the jail. But he wasn’t able to complete an interview with Mason was he was read his rights because he was “being uncooperative,” the report says.

Mason was charged with a probation violation on the grand theft warrant, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription (methamphetamine) and possession of drug equipment. He was being held with no bond and is due in Marion County Court on Jan. 8 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charges.
