ID thieves target Summerfield woman with false accounts

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the attempted theft of a Summerfield woman’s identity.

The victim told deputies that over the last several months, someone unknown to her had either opened or attempted to open accounts in her name at multiple financial institutions, as well as an unemployment account with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

The fraudulent attempts were made at Chase Bank, PNC Bank (three accounts) and First Tech Federal Credit Union, where a $499.96 transaction was recorded Aug. 29. The victim’s personal bank account was not affected.

The sheriff’s office contacted the banks and is continuing to investigate.
