Shovel-wielding Fort McCoy woman jailed on domestic battery charge

Valorie Stanley

A Fort McCoy woman was arrested Wednesday night after a domestic altercation during which she allegedly wielded a shovel at another woman.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that Valorie Elizabeth Stanley, 42, was intoxicated when she returned to their home on Northeast 239th Place after shopping. The woman said Stanley became belligerent with her over her children and a physical altercation ensued, with pushing and scratching.

The woman said Stanley then grabbed a shovel and started to come after her but was stopped when her boyfriend grabbed it. The boyfriend’s account of the incident supported the woman’s story and she had what appeared to be recent scratch marks on her face.

The deputy reported Stanley smelled of alcohol when she was interviewed and had a difficult time explaining what happened. She claimed the victim started an argument with her over nothing and then placed her in a chokehold, grabbed her neck and punched her ribs. The deputy could not find any marks or bruises consistent with Stanley’s version of events.

Due to there being an eyewitness and the victim having marks consistent with her account, Stanley was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and taken to the Marion County Jail, where she remains on $500 bond. She’s due in Marion County Court on Jan. 16.
