William G. Backes Jr.

William G. Backes Jr., 83, of Ocala, FL, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the Legacy House in Ocala. Born on June 6, 1935 in the Bronx, NY to the proud parents of William G. Sr. & Agnes (Moran) Backes.

Bill was a retired policeman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He was a former member of the PBA, the Signal 8-2 Club of Florida, the coast Guard Auxiliary, the Auxiliary of Hudson (FL), the Marine Corp League of Spring Hill, FL and a Charter Member of the DeLong Detachment in the Villages, FL. He was also a Past Commandant for the Department of Florida Marine Corp League from 2010-2102 and a founder of Injured Warriors Fund of Florida. Bill loved to fish and go boating and he was a former Charter Captain. He was also an avid and devoted NY Yankees fan.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 40 years, Miriam V. Backes; two daughters: Laura J. (Charles) Seevers and Diane Fietti; a son, Frank J. (Christine) Backes; his brother, Kenneth (Bonnie) Backes; his sister, Elizabeth (Mario) Venditti; two grandchildren: Katie & Keith and a great-grandson, Flint. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Joan Fritzgibbons & Barbara Huntzinger and a son, William Michael Beckes.

A Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 11:00am at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL with the family receiving friends on Monday, January 7, 2019 from 2:00-6:00pm at Roberts Funeral Home, Bruce West Chapel, 6241 SW SR 200, Ocala with a service performed by the DeLong Detachment during the viewing from 3:30-4:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s honor to the Hospice of Marion County.
