Ocala fast-food eatery closed by health inspector for second time in four months

For the second time in four months, an Ocala fast-food restaurant has been shut down by a health inspector over multiple violations.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, at 3558 SW College Rd.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, located at 3558 SW College Rd., was forced to close shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, after an inspector cited nine violations – two of which were labeled as high priority – a report on file with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation states.

One of the high-priority violations centered on roach activity in the eatery. The inspector reported finding two live roaches in the custard area, two on the floor under a machine and four others inside the custard motor area in a glue trap. And the second high-priority violation was for hot dogs at the cookline with no time marked.

An intermediate violation was recorded for an employee using a hand-wash sink at the cookline as a dump sink. And the inspector also cited six basic violations. Those included:

  • Dead roaches were found at the custard machine, on the floor under a cupholder table, on the floor under a water heater, on a shelf under the soda machine in the drive-thru area and under a prep sink near the back door.
  • An ice buildup in a reach-in freezer next to the fryers.
  • Standing water in the bottom of a reach-in cooler at the front counter and anther one at the cook line.
  • An ice cream cookie not covered in a walk-in freezer.
  • Soiled floors in a walk-in freezer.
  • Water leaking from pipe and/or faucet/handle at the handwash sink at the cook line.

The inspector returned the following day and continued to find violations on the first two visits and the restaurant remained closed. On the third visit, the inspector reported only the two basic violations surrounding the soiled freezer floors and the leak at the handwash sink on the cookline and the restaurant was allowed to reopen at 5 p.m.
