Health inspector forces Ocala barbecue eatery to shut its doors over multiple issues

An Ocala barbecue eatery was forced to close its doors last week after a health inspector cited 12 violations – two of which were labeled as high priority.

Fat Boy’s Bar-B-Q at 4132 NE Silver Springs Blvd.

Fat Boy’s Bar-B-Q, located at 4132 NE Silver Springs Blvd., was shut down in the middle of the lunch hour on Thursday, Feb. 7. The inspector cited high-priority violations for an opened case of raw fish over potatoes in a reach-in freezer and raw beef patties stored over slabs of raw pork ribs in a walk-in cooler.

The second high-priority violation centered on 25 small flying inspects near a drain under a high-temperature dish machine, a report on file with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation states.

An intermediate violation was cited because the restaurant couldn’t prove its employees had gone through state-approved training. And the inspector also recorded nine basic violations for:

  • Stained ceiling tiles near a smoker.
  • Stall doors in the women’s room that couldn’t be secured and a trash can with a missing lid.
  • A dead roach on the floor behind an ice machine.
  • Duct tape used on the door of a reach-in freezer and several broken lids in use.
  • A bag with an employee’s personal food stored above milk in a reach-in cooler at the front counter.
  • An employee’s keys on a shelf over a slicer on the cookline and cigarettes on a shelf over clean dishes on the frontline.
  • Slimy/mold-like buildup on gaskets on a reach-in freezer near the back door.
  • Several wet towels not stored in sanitizer and one placed under a cutting board.
  • No copy of the latest inspection report available.

The inspector returned the following day and the issue with flying inspects still existed, as did the stained ceiling over the smoker, the duct tape used on a freezer door and the broken lids in use. The restaurant remained closed until the inspector returned later in the day and found only the stained ceiling. The restaurant was given more time to repair that issue and was allowed to reopen shortly after noon.
