Marion County Commissioner Carl Zalak III has announced plans to run for the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller in the upcoming 2020 election cycle.
Zalak is running against fellow Republican Greg Harrell, who serves as general counsel for the Clerk of the Court. So far, they are the only two candidates to file for the office, which is being vacated by longtime Clerk of the Court David Ellspermann, who has announced that he won’t seek a seventh term.
Zalak was first voted into office as the District 4 commissioner in 2010. His decision to run for the Clerk of the Court seat will require him to resign from the commission by June 5, 2020.
Zalak’s decision also means that the Marion County Commission will have a different look after the 2020 election. District 1 Commissioner David Moore also isn’t running for re-election, as he’s seeking the office of county property appraiser. And both Chairman Michelle Stone, who represents District 5, and Jeff Gold, of District 3, have filed for re-election. As of Tuesday afternoon, no other candidates had filed to run against them.
