Ocala man who went home to sleep charged in hit-and-run crash

Larry Walter Cotten

An Ocala man was arrested after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident and going home to sleep.

Larry Walter Cotten, 63, was charged with felony hit and run after the collision, which happened shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday on SW County Road 484.

The driver of the other vehicle told the responding Florida Highway Patrol trooper that a white GMC vehicle struck her vehicle in the rear, causing damage. She said she was able to take a video and a photo of the driver and vehicle, and that he looked at her and left, according to the FHP report.

The trooper ran the license tag shown in the future, and the address came back to Cotton’s address of 7255 SE 12th Circle. The trooper went to the home and saw the white GMC vehicle with matching damage and paint transfer from the other vehicle. It also had damage to the rear with a blown-out back window, according to the report.

Cotten refused to come out of the house. His wife told the trooper he came home “drunk,” and his grandson said, “he came home and said he may have hit someone, leave him alone, he was going to sleep,” according to the report.

After the trooper requested backup, Cotten finally came out of the house. He said he had talked to an attorney and didn’t want to speak. He was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Monday on $5,000 bond. No court date was set.
