Nasty battle over gas money lands Dunnellon woman in jail

Mary Jo Ann Collins

A 74-year-old Dunnellon woman was arrested Monday after an argument with a family member over gas money.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on SW 148th Lane, where Mary Jo Ann Collins said she had picked up the victim from her community service and they began to argue over gas money. Collins said the victim was being disrespectful, so she slapped her. Collins said the victim then punched her in the chest, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim told the deputy that Collins picked her up from her community service and began yelling at her about gas money. The victim said she yelled back and Collins then slapped her multiple times. The victim said she pushed Collins in the chest to get her away from her, the report said.

Based on the statements, Collins was charged with domestic battery and taken to the Marion County Jail. She was released Tuesday night on $500 bond and will appear in Marion County Court on June 13.
