City hosting public meeting for bigger bike lanes, wider sidewalks on NE Eighth Avenue

In preparation for the NE Eighth Avenue Road Diet Project Phase II, the City of Ocala will host a public meeting Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. at the Discovery Center, 701 NE Sanchez Ave. The goal of this public meeting is to collect input from residents and business owners for design elements within the second phase of this project.

This public meeting will present concepts related to the project including buffered bicycle lanes and wider sidewalks to better accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians; raised medians and landscaping to enhance the corridor; and roundabouts at NE Second Street, NE Third Street, NE Sixth Street and NE Ninth Street to slow traffic and facilitate safer crossings.

In early 2018, the City of Ocala held multiple public meetings to discuss the first phase of this project. Comments received from those meetings prompted the City Engineer’s Office to redesign certain elements of the project. The City’s consultant, Kimley-Horn, will also be presenting project designs to the community at this meeting to gain additional input and feedback.
