Kicking Ocala woman charged with child abuse after violent battle with juvenile

Mary Lynn Landress

An Ocala woman accused of putting a girl in a headlock and punching her slipped out of her handcuffs and tried to kick a deputy while being arrested Tuesday.

Mary Lynn Landress, 46, was charged with child abuse without great bodily harm and resisting an officer without violence. Witnesses said the incident started as an altercation between two juveniles and escalated when Landress became involved, according to the Marion County sheriff’s office report.

Landress freely admitted to deputies that she put the juvenile in a headlock and punched her. She can be heard on video telling the victim she will “(expletive deleted) choke her out.” The victim had marks on her upper chest that were fresh and appeared to be from fingernails, the report said.

While being escorted to the patrol vehicle after her arrest, Landress managed to extract her right hand from the handcuff. She was given several commands to place both hands behind her back to have the cuff placed back on her wrist, but she refused and had to be taken to the ground, according to the report.

Once on the ground, Landress was rolled onto her stomach. She then pulled a back leg back and tried to kick a deputy but missed. She was placed in the back of the patrol vehicle once she was properly cuffed and taken to the Marion County Jail without further incident, the report said.

Landress was released Thursday on $2,000 bond and will appear in Marion County Court on July 23.
