An Ocala man was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage after plowing into two parked cars in a restaurant parking lot.
Daniel Santamaria Hernandez, 20, was also charged with not having a valid driver’s license and a probation violence after the hit-and-run crash, which happened early Sunday at the Applebees restaurant, 2615 SW 19th Avenue Road.
The Ocala Police officer who arrived at the scene observed Hernandez sitting on the curb and yelling at paramedics and firefighters who were trying to check on him. Hernandez’s speech was slurred as he was yelling and the officer detected a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him, according to the police report.
A witness told the officer he was across the street, in the Planet Fitness parking lot, when he observed Hernandez, in a white Nissan pickup truck, revving his engine in the parking lot. The witness said Hernandez drove out of the parking lot, onto SW 19th avenue Road, straight over the raised concrete median, straight over the curbs, and into the rear parking lot of Applebees, where it struck a black 2013 Volkswagen and a gray 2006 Mercury SUV. The witness said Hernandez exited his vehicle and tried to flee on foot before being detained by Applebees employees, the report said.
The officer tried to speak with Hernandez, who was visibly intoxicated and would only curse at the officer. Hernandez kept trying to stand up, and upon standing was unsteady on his feet and would stagger around. He continued to be uncooperative and refused to submit to field sobriety tests, according to the report.
