‘Highly inebriated’ Umatilla man jailed after threatening to cut off woman’s head

Tony Larry Smith

An intoxicated Umatilla man accused of threatening to cut off a woman’s head was arrested Tuesday night and is being held on $100,000 bond.

Tony Larry Smith, 59, was taken into custody after Marion County sheriff’s deputies spoke with the victim’s juvenile sister, who reported the incident. The victim told deputies she had been sitting in front of her tent when Smith, who she believed was drunk, approached her and started to yell. She said he picked up what appeared to be a kitchen knife with a brown handle and said, “Keep (expletive deleted) with me I’m going to cut your head off,” the report says, adding that the victim’s stepmother stopped Smith by grabbing his arm.

Smith, who deputies noted was “highly inebriated,” said nothing happened and refused to speak with them. But he then began to spontaneously yell, “I did it,” the report says.

Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. He is due in court Aug. 20 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charge.
