Crews from Marion County Fire Rescue battled a structure fire Sunday afternoon in Marion Oaks.
Firefighters were dispatched at 2:15 p.m. after a 911 caller reported black smoke coming from the back of a residence in the 2000 block of SW 153rd Place. A resident of the home said he heard popping noises and the ceiling then collapsed. He and his 3-year-old son were able to escape the burning home.
Marion Oaks Engine Company #24 reported a large column of black smoke while en route to the blaze. Engine 24 arrived on scene at 2:23 p.m. and quickly mounted an offensive interior attack, while rescue crews went into rescue mode for a primary search.
Additional crews from Liberty Station #32, Ray Lloyd Station #31 and Shady Station #16 arrived on scene a short time later to assist in battling the structure fire. A district captain established command over the blaze and directed firefighters on the offensive attack.
When firefighters arrived, flames already had broken through the roof, with a heavy fire load in the attic. Three hose lines were in operations to extinguish the blaze and it was called under control at 2:42 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Marion County Fire Rescue’s fire marshal. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced family.
