Residents, staff, and local dignitaries cut the ribbon on the new Marion Oaks splash pad on Tuesday morning.
The splash pad, which was the brain child Marion Oaks Advisory Council member Alice Mitchell, was a project that was two years in the making.
“If you’ve been around me for the past two years, you know this is my dream come true” said Mitchell of the project. She went on to explain that during a trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, she came across a splash pad and thought that the local community would benefit from the same.
After gaining approval from the Marion Oaks Advisory Board and Marion County Commissioners, the 40-foot wide pad was constructed to feature 15 water jets, a large water umbrella, and a sitting wall.
The new pad was opened for children to enjoy this morning, with a couple dozen members of the community in attendance to celebrate its opening.
Marion County Commissioner Kathy Bryant helped was also in attendance to help christen the new pad, offering a special thanks to Mitchell and staff.
“You should be very proud of your community and you have a dedicated group of volunteers who have worked really, really hard to make this happen,” said Bryant.
