Ocklawaha woman accused of slapping daughter’s boyfriend

Beth Glea Baker

A 62-year-old Ocklahawa woman was arrested Monday after admitting she slapped her daughter’s boyfriend during a dispute over a cell phone.

Beth Glea Baker, of 6580 SE 165th Ave., called 911 at around 10 a.m. saying her cell phone had been locked, and the operator could hear her arguing in the background. Baker’s daughter told the responding Marion County sheriff’s deputy that Baker attacked her boyfriend for no reason, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Baker’s daughter said she and the victim borrowed Baker’s cell phone with her permission because they believed the daughter’s cell phone had been stolen. Baker’s daughter said they had used an application to lock her cell phone so it couldn’t be used, and the application had inadvertently locked Baker’s cell phone, too, since they share an account, the report said.

Baker told the deputy she slapped the victim in the chest because she didn’t like his attitude. The victim said he wanted to press charges because he was worried she might get more violent. The incident was determined not to be domestic because Baker and the victim are not related and the victim lives at a different address, according to the report.

Baker was charged with simple battery and taken to the Marion County Jail, where she was released Monday night on $1,000 bond.
