Silver Springs man accused of battering woman pregnant with twins

Garrett Cody Haynes

A Silver Springs man was arrested after being accused of pulling a pregnant woman off a bed, smashing a wooden dollhouse over her and throwing her cell phone out the window during a nasty domestic spat.

Garrett Cody Haynes, 25, was charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant woman after the incident, which happened shortly before midnight Sunday at his residence on SE 120th Avenue. The victim, who is pregnant with twins, told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy the fight started when she was on the bed, working on her cell phone, and Haynes grabbed her by the leg and pulled her off the bed and onto the floor, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Haynes got into her face yelling and grabbed her wrists to keep her down as she tried to kick at him in an effort to free herself. She said Haynes then grabbed a wooden dollhouse and broke it over her, causing the pieces to rain down on her, the report said.

The victim said she got up and walked into another room to get her phone when Haynes took it out of her hand and threw it out the window. She said she went outside to get her phone, but he took it away again, according to the report.

The victim said she ran towards her vehicle with Haynes chasing her. She said he grabbed her shoulders, spun her around to face him and then pushed her backwards into the vehicle, causing her to hit her head on the car door. She said she ran down the street, away from Haynes, when she heard him calling 911, the report said.

Haynes told the deputy that the victim became emotional during an argument and struck him first. He said he told her to leave, and then grabbed her by the leg and pulled her off the bed to get her to leave. He said the victim began striking him and he threw her phone out the window out of anger, according to the report.

Haynes said the fight continued throughout the house and he only tried to hold her back and keep her from striking him. He said she want outside to get in her vehicle, and at that point he decided he didn’t want her to leave any more. Haynes said tried to keep her from getting in the vehicle, and when he grabbed her by the shoulders, she flung herself back against the vehicle and entered the passenger side. He said he took her car keys and called 911, according to the report.

Haynes said he knew the victim is pregnant with twins and that he knew he was in the wrong and felt regret. He was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Monday on $1,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Oct. 8.
