Man with alcohol on his breath behind bars after attack on 68-year-old Ocala woman

Thomas John Alvarez

A 61-year-old Ocala man with alcohol on his breath was jailed early Wednesday morning after a bloodied 68-year-old woman called Marion County sheriff’s deputies for help.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence on NW 58th Court in Ocala, the woman said that 61-year-old Thomas John Alvarez had grabbed her right arm and caused an abrasion about one inch in diameter that was bleeding. She also had several other bruises on her body, but she said those were caused by a medical condition, a sheriff’s office report states.

The woman told deputies that Alvarez was homeless, so she was letting him stay with her until he got back on his feet. She said he was “extremely drunk” and started a verbal altercation with her. And she added that he got in front of her and started yelling into her face when she attempted to walk to her kitchen, the report says.

The woman said she told Alvarez to move and he grabbed her by the arm and told her he was going to “punch her in the face.” She said she hit Alvarez in the chest numerous times and was able to finally get away from him, the report says.

Deputies then spoke with Alvarez and reported being able to smell a “strong odor” of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. He admitted to recently consuming four beers, his speech was slurred and he “struggled to maintain focus” while being questioned by deputies, the report says.

Alvarez called the woman “crazy” and claimed that she started an argument with him in the living room. He admitted to standing in front of the woman and blocking her from going into her kitchen but denied touching her, the report says.

Alvarez was taken into custody and while searching him deputies found a small bag containing a green leafy substance that field tested positive for marijuana located between the pages of a small calendar is his right front pocket. Alvarez said the calendar belonged to him but claimed the marijuana wasn’t his, the report says.

Alvarez was transported to the Marion County Jail and charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older and possession of marijuana (not more than 20 grams). He is being held on $3,000 bond and is due in court Oct. 15 at 9 a.m.
