Ocala man can’t get his story straight during DUI arrest

Hans Stephen Shumate

A 25-year-old Ocala man accused of drunk driving told one officer he had two beers and another officer he had two margaritas after he was pulled over Wednesday night for failing to stay in his lane.

The Ocala Police officer who stopped Hans Stephen Shumate along the 600 block of U.S. Hwy. 441 detected the odor of alcohol coming from his vehicle. Another officer detected an odor of alcohol on Shumate’s breath that got stronger each time he spoke, according to the OPD report.

Shumate, whose address is listed as 23 Hemlock Run, failed a series of field sobriety tests and refused to submit to a breath test. He was charged with DUI and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Thursday on $1,000 bond.
