Passed-out man arrested after drugs found in vehicle

A 19-year-old Ocala man found passed out in his vehicle was arrested last week on DUI and drug charges.

At around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, a Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to the area near 300 NE 52nd Court to investigate a report of a suspicious vehicle with someone sleeping inside it. Upon arrival, the deputy observed a black 2008 Chevrolet four-door vehicle parked in the middle of the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The driver, later identified as Darrin Spinella, was sleeping in the driver’s seat and the vehicle was in park with the engine running. The deputy removed the keys and tried to awaken Spinella several times before he responded. There was an odor of vomit, marijuana and alcohol coming from Spinella, who had vomited on his shirt and pants. He also had vomit in his nose, the report said.

Spinella, whose address is listed as 5515 SE 38th St., told the deputy he was coming from a friend’s house, where he had some bad food that caused him to vomit. He said he tried to park in the grass but was unsuccessful. Spinella said he had been using marijuana and had consumed a couple of beers, according to the report.

In plain view in the vehicle was what appeared to be a glass bong for marijuana. When Spinelli opened the center console to get his driver’s license, a deputy observed a container with a green leafy substance that tested positive for THC. Spinelli said he also had a bowl in his pocket that contained marijuana. The substance also tested positive for THC, the report said.

Spinella, who failed a series of field sobriety exercises, was arrested and charged with DUI, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of drug equipment. He was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was still being held Monday on $2,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Oct. 30.
