Salt Springs man who ‘felt rage’ jailed after standoff with man with crowbar

Jimmy Ryan Daniel

A Salt Springs man holding a wooden stick who was in a standoff with a man armed with a crowbar found himself behind bars early Sunday afternoon.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in Salt Springs and when they arrived, they spotted 40-year-old Jimmy Ryan Daniel on one side of a flatbed truck and the other man on the opposite side of the vehicle. Daniel was holding the wooden stick with his hand raised while the other man held his crowbar in one hand and a cell phone in the other while speaking with a 911 operator. When Daniel saw deputies arrive, he jumped a chain link fence and ran inside his residence, a sheriff’s office report states.

The man with the crowbar told deputies that he had been sleeping in his room when Daniel banged on his door and kicked it open while holding a crowbar. He said Daniel swung the crowbar at him several times and struck him on his left arm, causing a large scratch. He claimed that Daniel stated several times that he would kill him, the report says.

The man said he took the crowbar away from Daniel and walked outside. He said Daniel then picked up the piece of wood from inside the house, followed him outside and continued to try to hit him, the report says.

Daniel told deputies that he “woke up and felt rage.” He denied holding the crowbar and hitting the man and appeared to be under the influence, the report says.

Daniel was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with aggravated battery using a deadly weapon. He was being held on $2,000 bond and his next court date hasn’t yet been set, jail records show.
