A 20-year-old Ocala man was arrested for allegedly battering a female friend who said something he didn’t like.
James D. Kuhns, whose address is listed as homeless, was charged with simple battery after the incident, which happened early Thursday at the Moon Shadow Apartments, 1655 SW 5th Ave.
An Ocala Police officer responded to the report of a disturbance at the apartment shortly after 1 a.m. and knocked on the door. Kuhns opened it and when asked what was going on, said he was drinking with a group of people inside the apartment and they just got too loud, according to the OPD report.
Inside the apartment, another officer spoke with the victim and another female who said she witnessed Kuhns battering the victim. The witness said she, Kuhns, the victim and a male witness were inside the apartment drinking beers. She said the victim made a comment Kuhns didn’t like and he pushed and punched her multiple time, the report said
The witness said at one point, Kuhns had his hands around the victim’s neck and was choking her. She said the altercation occurred in an upstairs bedroom, and that Kuhns and the victim are friends and not involved in a romantic relationship, according to the report.
The officer searched two upstairs bedrooms and observed blood on a bedroom door and holes in the wall inside the closet where the witness said Kuhns slammed the victim’s head against the wall. In the second bedroom, the officer saw more blood on the wall by the doorway where the witness said the altercation continued, the report said.
The officer spoke with the victim, who was being treated by emergency medical services. The victim, who appeared to be intoxicated, said Kuhns pushed her and punched her in the face multiple times. She said Kuhns battered her because of a comment she made that he didn’t like, according to the report.
The officer observed a bruise on the victim’s left cheekbone and her left eye appeared bloodshot. She also had blood on the white t-shirt she was wearing. The victim said she couldn’t recall whether or not Kuhns tried to choke her, but she thought he might have tried to, the report said.
The male witness said he saw Kuhns physically beat the victim by pushing and punching her multiple times. He said Kuhns also put his hands around the victim’s neck and choked her, according to the report.
The victim originally didn’t want to pursue charges but changed her mind shortly after Kuhns left the scene. Kuhns was picked up at a Marathon gas station, 1010 S. Pine Ave., where he told officers he didn’t want to speak to them. He was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was still being held Monday on $2,000 bond. Kuhns is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on Oct. 28.
