Nasty battle over cell phone lands 60-year-old Ocala man behind bars

David Mark Hickey

An Ocala man found himself behind bars early Wednesday morning after a woman claimed he struck her while attempting to grab her phone.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that she was sitting in her vehicle in the parking lot next to the Dollar General store at 6725 SE Maricamp Rd. in Ocala when 60-year-old David Mark Hickey pulled in behind her and came up to her window. She said she asked him to leave and believed he might have been drinking, a sheriff’s office report states.

The woman said Hickey wouldn’t leave her alone and started asking her for his phone, which she said she didn’t have. She said he then hit her forearm as he reached inside her vehicle and continued to attempt to grab her phone, the report says, adding that the woman was able to call 911 and then leave the area.

The deputy noted that the woman’s forearm was slightly swollen and red. She also told him several times that Wednesday’s incident wasn’t the first time Hickey had battered her, the report says.

The deputy then made contact with Hickey at his residence at 9896 SW 61st Ct. in Ocala. He claimed he was trying to grab the phone away from the woman and “if he did hit her, it would only have been in her hand.” He also stated that the victim “is crazy and he never touched her,” the report says.

Hickey, who has a prior conviction for simple battery in St. Augustine, was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail. He was charged with battery (second or subsequent offense) and released late Wednesday night on $2,000 bond. His next court date hasn’t yet been set, jail records show.
