Man with long rap sheet charged with snatching ex-lover’s purse

An Ocala man with a long rap sheet was arrested last week after he allegedly pulled a purse off a former lover’s neck and ran away with it.

Mikel Shawn King, 52, was charged with robbery by sudden snatching. According to Marion County Jail records, he’s been arrested 19 times since 1990 for offenses including domestic battery, aggravated battery, drug possession, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, driving with a suspended license, and probation violations. King’s most recent previous arrest was in March on drug charges.

An Ocala Police officer responded to the victim’s residence Oct. 30 to investigate a burglary in progress. The victim said King, who had just left the house, had grown jealous of her new male roommate. She said she was sitting in her living room when she heard glass break in a bedroom, according to the OPD report.

The victim said King had smashed a glass window and then ran to the opposite side of the house, where he had the window open and was trying to gain access to the house. She said she ran to the window and tried to close it while King was still trying to hold it open, the report said.

The victim said she had a purse slung around her neck and when she got close to the window, King grabbed it and pulled it so hard that it broke the strap. She said she and King have had intimate relations off and on for the past five years, and that King lives at the residence, according to the report.

The victim’s roommate said he met King at the front door and told him to go away. He said King cursed at him before fleeing, the report said.

The officer observed broken glass with blood drops on the east bedroom window and the removed screen lining on the west bedroom window. The victim’s purse contained her driver’s license, an ATM/debit card and $300 in cash. The purse itself was worth $89, according to the report.

King was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Friday on $5,000 bond. He’ll appear in Marion County Jail on Dec. 3.
