Woman nabbed at Ocala Wal-Mart after being accused of ripping off groceries

Kathleen McCarthy Felix

A 64-year-old woman found herself behind bars recently after she was accused of taking items from an Ocala Wal-Mart.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was called to the store, located at 9570 SW Hwy. 200, and when he arrived, an asset protection associate told him that she had watched Kathleen McCarthy Felix, of Ocala, put items in bags at a self-checkout counter without paying for them. The employee claimed that Felix was stacking multiple items on top of each other and then only scanning one item, a sheriff’s office report states.

The deputy watched video surveillance footage of the incident and said it clearly showed Felix failing to scan some of the items that were stacked on top of each other and then putting them in bags. He said 47 items weren’t scanned and were valued at $181.01, the report says.

After being read her rights, Felix told the deputy she had entered the store to go grocery shopping and had made the decision to not pay for half of the items as she approached the checkout area, the report says.

Felix, who lives on SW 73rd Terrace in Ocala, was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with larceny/petit theft. She was released on $1,000 bond and her next court date hasn’t yet been set.
