Ocklawaha man held without bond on domestic battery charge

Stephen Matthew McClain

A 21-year-old Ocklawaha man who spent more than three months in the Marion County Jail last year after becoming violent with deputies during a drunk-driving arrest is being held without bond for allegedly battering a woman during a nasty spat last week.

Stephen Matthew McClain was charged with domestic battery (second or subsequent offense) after the latest incident, which happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday at a mobile home on East Highway 25. He’s also being held for violating his probation for his January conviction for resisting an officer with violence, battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of methamphetamine, and DUI stemming from his arrest in October 2018.

The woman who called 911 told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that McClain was battering the victim and she was covered in blood. The deputy knocked on the door and nobody answered. Believing the victim’s safety was at risk, he opened the unlocked front door and took McClain into custody, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim, who was so intoxicated that she fell off her bed onto the floor, had numerous facial injuries. She refused to cooperate with the deputy, saying only that she “fell,” the report said.

One witness said he saw McClain shove the victim, causing her to fall and strike her head on the bathroom floor. Another witness said she saw the same thing, adding that she McClain called the victim a “junkie” and slapped her on her upper left thigh, according to the report.

McClain was arrested and taken to jail, where he awaits a Dec. 10 date in Marion County Court.
