Cigarette-flipping mom arrested after son shows officers mark on cheek

Mary Jo Erickson

An Ocala woman was arrested last week after a nasty battle with her son that resulted in a mark on his cheek from a lit cigarette.

Mary Jo Erickson, 69, was taken into custody early Wednesday afternoon and transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with domestic battery. She was released on her own recognizance the following day and is due in court on Dec. 2 at 9 a.m. to answer to the charge.

Erickson told Ocala Police officers that the incident started after her son called her and said he needed gas money. She said she met him at a gas station and they argued about the keys to a vehicle. She claimed her son pushed her, she pushed back and he burned himself on a cigarette she had in her hand, an Ocala Police report states.

Erickson’s son told officers that he needed gas so he called his mother. He said they had a verbal confrontation and she flicked a cigarette at him, the report says, adding that officers noted a mark on his cheek before placing Erickson under arrest.
