Ocala man charged with murder in shooting death of his 24-year-old cousin

Alton Leandrew Wilkerson

An Ocala man has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his cousin.

Alton Leandrew Wilkerson, 22, was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly admitting to the shooting. He was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail after calling 911 to report that he had shot someone, an Ocala Police Department report states.

Officers were called to a home in the 2300 block of SW Fort King Street shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday night. When they arrived, they entered the residence and found 24-year-old Tyler Richardson lying on the floor suffering from several gunshot wounds. They immediately rendered aid to Richardson and searched the residence to check for additional victims or suspects, a police report states.

EMS arrived on scene a short time later and transported Richardson to Ocala Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:58 p.m., the report says.

During the investigation, detectives received word that Wilkerson had called into the agency’s dispatch center and admitting to shooting someone. He met officers at the Circle K at 5986 W Silver Springs Blvd. and was taken into custody, the report says.

Wilkerson was positively identified by witnesses as the man they saw fleeing the residence immediately following the shooting. One witness reported hearing four gunshots, seeing Wilkerson exit the house with a firearm and then looking through a window of the residence and seeing Richardson lying on the living room floor.

Wilkerson was cooperative with detectives but couldn’t give a reason for the shooting, saying only that “he ended up slipping and picked up a gun and shot somebody.” He said he found the weapon in a chair at his brother’s house, where the shooting occurred. He said no one else was at the residence at the time of the shooting, the report says.

Wilkerson told detectives he had discarded the gun near his brother’s house and agreed to show them where it was. They then located the black Glock 9mm handgun with an extended magazine lying on the ground under a tree. Wilkerson confirmed it was the gun he used in the shooting, the report says, adding that detectives also found four spent shell casings in the house where the shooting occurred.
