Marion sheriff identifies woman killed in Christmas afternoon officer-involved shooting

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman who was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call in the 11400 block of SW 79th Terrace in the Palm Cay neighborhood shortly before 5 p.m. in reference to a suicide threat. When they arrived, a 59-year-old woman later identified as Lori Jean Canada exited the residence and pointed a gun at them, a sheriff’s office report says.

Deputies shot Canada and immediately rendered aid. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. No deputies were injured during the incident and their names are being withheld, the report says.

As is customary in officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting a thorough review of the incident with the full cooperation of the sheriff’s office.
