Pair arrested after drugs found during Belleview traffic stop

Raechelle Lynn Pope

Two women were arrested on drug charges after their vehicle was pulled over in Belleview.

Raechelle Lynn Pope, 51, of 12310 SE 115th Ave. in Belleview, was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia, and Karen Lynn Brumfield, 63, of 5200 SE 26th Ave. in Ocala, was charged with possession of cocaine.

At around 5:30 p.m. Monday, a Marion County sheriff’s deputy observed a red Isuzu pickup truck failing to maintain its traveling lanes and traveling 45 mph in a 35-mph zone on SE 108th Terrace Road. During the ensuing traffic stop, a K-9 detected the presence of narcotics in an open-air sniff, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Deputies found a small, clear bag containing a white and hard substance in a gum container belonging to Pope, who was the driver. Pope then told the deputies about a beige handbag containing another small bag of the same substance, as well as a glass pipe and push rod that she said she used to do drugs. The packages weighed 1 gram and 0.5 grams, respectively, and the substance field tested positive for cocaine, the report said.

A similar package containing 2 grams of a similar substance that also tested positive for cocaine was found in Brumfield’s purse, according to the report.

Both women were taken to the Marion County Jail. Pope was released Tuesday on $3,000 bond, while Brumfield was released Tuesday on $2,000 bond. Court dates have not been set.
