An Ocala man was jailed four days after a spat with his lady friend as she tried to move out of their residence.
A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was called to a house on Palm Road on Thursday afternoon and when he arrived, the woman said that she had gotten into an altercation with 56-year-old Neftali Cortes Lopez. She claimed he had grabbed her arms and legs and told her she wasn’t going to leave, a sheriff’s office report states, adding that the woman then left and went to her daughter’s residence.
The woman said she didn’t call law enforcement for help on the day of the incident because she was afraid of Lopez and “just wanted to get her belongings.” The deputy noted small circular bruising on the woman’s upper thigh consistent with her statement about Lopez grabbing her legs. Bruises on her arms were no longer visible. But she showed the deputy photos that were taken after the incident showing bruising on the top part of her forearms, the report says.
Lopez told the deputy he was assisting the woman with the move throughout the weekend and was “never physical” with her and didn’t put his hands on her. He also claimed that any bruising on the woman’s body “was caused from her moving her furniture,” the report says.
Lopez was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with battery. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 18 at 8:30 a.m. to answer to the charge.
