Routine traffic stop lands duo behind bars after sheriff’s K-9 alerts on vehicle

Joseph Wiley Campanile

Two men found themselves behind bars early Monday morning after a Marion County sheriff’s deputy pulled over a vehicle for failing to stop before entering a roadway.

The deputy stopped a white Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by 39-year-old Joseph Wiley Campanile in the 3400 block of S Pine Avenue late Sunday night. A computer check showed that Campanile’s license had been expired since 2005. He also had a New Hampshire license that had been expired since August, the report says.

During the traffic stop, a sheriff’s K-9 dog performed an open-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted on the front passenger side, indicated the likely presence of narcotics.

Curtis Edgar Mock

A search of the vehicle revealed a small bag containing a green leafy substance that field tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids and a teal-colored pipe inside the glove compartment. The vehicle’s passenger, 40-year-old Curtis Edward Mock, admitted that both of the items belonged to him, the report says.

Both Campanile and Mock were taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail. Campanile, who lives at 21491 SE 71st Pl. in Morriston, was charged with driving while license expired for more than six months. He was released early Tuesday morning on $500 bond and his next court date hasn’t yet been set, jail records show.

Mock, who lives at 11850 NW 7th Pl. in Ocala, was charged with possession of a control substance without a prescription and possession of drug equipment. His bond also was revoked on a previous charge of driving while license suspended or revoked (third or subsequent offense). He was being held on $16,000 bond and is due in court on Feb. 19 at 9 a.m.
