62-year-old Williston man killed when SUV slams into van in Marion County

A 62-year-old Williston man died Wednesday morning after his vehicle slammed into a van in Marion County.

Eugene Flechas had been traveling north on U.S. Hwy. 27 just south of NW 160th Avenue at about 8:50 p.m. when his 2004 Toyota SUV ran into the rear of a 2005 Chevy van driven by 51-year-old Alvaro Gonzalez Navarro, of Bronson. Flechas’ SUV came to rest in the grass median facing southwest, while Navarro exited the east shoulder and came to rest facing north, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

Both drivers were transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center by crews from Marion County Fire Rescue. Flechas was pronounced dead a short time later and Navarro suffered serious injuries, the report says.

The investigation into the incident is continuing. It hasn’t been determined if alcohol played a factor and charges are pending. Navarro was properly restrained in his vehicle but Flechas wasn’t wearing his seat belt, the report says.
