Belleview man accused of busting woman’s lip because of her drinking

Thomas Jacob Sands

A Belleview man was arrested for allegedly battering a woman because she had been drinking earlier and he didn’t like it.

Thomas Jacob Sands, 48, was charged with simple domestic battery after the incident, which happened Monday. The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that Sands hit her in the face because he was angry that she had been drinking earlier and he doesn’t want her drinking, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said she then went to sleep at around 7 p.m. and Sands woke her up and was yelling and cursing at her, asking who was calling her. She said when she got off the bed, Sands swung at her and hit her in the face. The deputy observed the right side of the victim’s face was swollen and her lip was busted, the report said.

The victim said she left the room to call law enforcement and call her mother, who was the one who was calling in the first place. She said she tried to go back into the room but Sands wouldn’t let her, so she broke a hole in the door to try to get into the room because she believed Sands was going to harm her dogs, according to the report.

The victim said she thought Sands pointed a weapon at her and she ran outside and waited for law enforcement. When asked what kind of weapon was pointed at her, she said she didn’t remember if it was a pistol or a long rifle. Then she said she didn’t know for sure if he was pointing a weapon at her, the report said.

Sands told the deputy that the victim was the one cursing and yelling. He said she had too much to drink and was going crazy. Sands said the victim decided to break the door and put a hole in it. He said he and the victim didn’t touch each other, The deputy observed fresh cuts on one of the victim’s hands. He said he got those at work, according to the report.

Sands was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released early Wednesday on $500 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on March 20.
