Ocala man charged in liquor store fight with woman

Yashavantrumar Patel

An Ocala man is accused of shoving a woman and throwing a bottle of booze at her, and then tearing down security camera wires during an outburst at a liquor store.

Yashavantrumar D. Patel, 38, was charged with simple battery after the incident, which happened Saturday night. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office report did not include Patel’s address or the incident location, only that it was a business. Patel’s employer is listed in the report as Anthony Liquor Store. Marion County Jail records list his address as Ocala.

The victim told a sheriff’s deputy that Patel started yelling and screaming at her for no reason while she was at the cash register. She said Patel used an open to push her on the head out of the way of the register, and he then started ripping internet cables and camera wires from the walls, according to the report.

The victim said she walked in front of the counter and Patel followed her. He said she was in the front of the store when Patel grabbed a bottle of liquor and threw it at her. The victim said she was only a few feet away and was able to stop the bottle from hitting her body by blocking it with her hand, the report said.

The victim said she ran towards the back of the store and Patel grabbed another bottle of liquor but dropped it on the floor. She said when Patel’s uncle came out of the restroom, she went back to the front of the store and Patel went back behind the counter. She said Patel grabbed a lime from the counter and threw it, hitting her on her left ear. The victim said she then went outside to get away from Patel, according to the report

The deputy observed no visible marks in the area where the victim said Patel hit her. There was a broken bottle of liquor still inside its box that the victim said hit her in the hand. The deputy observed another bottle of liquor on the ground towards the back of the store, and a lime near the front door, the report said.

The deputy was unable to speak with Patel’s uncle due to a language barrier. Patel was sitting in a chair behind the register when approached by the deputy. When asked what happened, Patel said, “Nothing.” He had a hard time speaking because he was very intoxicated and he denied all of the victim’s accusations, according to the report.

Patel, who was previously charged with domestic battery in November 2018, was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was being held without bond.
