Accused batterer caught with weed at jail

Dallas James Mobbs

A Daytona Beach man arrested Wednesday after a lover’s spat with another man had drug charges added when marijuana was found in his wallet while he was being checked into jail.

Dallas James Mobbs, 30, was charged with battery (second or subsequent offense), smuggling contraband into a detention facility, and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. A computer check of his history revealed two previous battery convictions in Volusia County.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on SE 119th Place in Belleview, where the victim said he was involved in a verbal argument Tuesday night about him not wanting to date Mobbs. He said he and Mobbs have had sex but were not involved in a dating relationship, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said Mobbs left the location and returned Wednesday morning when the victim wasn’t there. He said when he returned, an argument ensued and he told Mobbs to leave. The victim said Mobbs struck him on the left side of his face, causing his cheek to swell and bleed, the report said.

A witness said Mobbs and the victim argued the previous night and Mobbs left. She said Mobbs returned to the location in the morning and used the back porch to charge his cell phone. The witness said the victim returned and asked Mobbs to leave the location but Mobbs refused to go. She said she didn’t see a physical altercation but heard yelling and screaming coming from the back porch and then from in front of the residence, according to the report.

Mobbs told a deputy he was staying at the location with the victim but was kicked out the previous night. He said he returned Wednesday morning to charge his phone and get his belongings. Mobbs said he and the victim argued over him refusing to leave, but he denied ever being physical with the victim, the report said.

Mobbs was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail. While inside the jail, a small wrapping paper containing a green leafy substance was found inside a small pocket of Mobbs’ brown leather wallet. The substance tested positive for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, according to the report.

Mobbs was released from jail early Saturday morning on $3,500 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on April 21.
