Ocala woman accused of hitting man with curtain rod and choking boy

Jennifer M. Burke

An Ocala woman is accused of hitting a man with a curtain rod and grabbing a boy by the neck during a recent wild domestic brawl.

Jennifer M. Burke, 30, is being held on $4,000 bond in the Marion County Jail on charges of child abuse without great bodily harm and simple domestic battery. She’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on April 14.

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded to a disturbance call at around 9:50 p.m. The victim said Burke had been drinking heavily when she attacked him and the boy. He said she came out of the bedroom unprovoked and tried to take the child out of the rocker and into the bedroom with her. The victim said Burke grabbed the boy aggressively and he was afraid she was going to hurt him, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said he tried to take the boy away from Burke and she slapped him across the face several times. He said once he got the child away from her, Burke attacked him with a curtain rod, the report said.

The victim said after Burke stopped attacking him, she grabbed the boy by wrapping her arm around his neck and tried to pull him into the bedroom with her. The victim said he was able to get the child out of her grasp. This part of the struggle happened while the victim was on the phone with a 911 operator. He could be heard saying, “Let him go, you’re choking him,” according to the report.

The deputy observed a fresh scratch on the victim’s chest. The victim said he was unsure if it was caused by Burke striking him with her hands, the curtain rod or a computer she threw at him, the report said.

The juvenile victim told the deputy he was in the living room and witnessed Burke strike the adult victim in the face. He said Burke grabbed him by the neck and started pulling him backwards. The child demonstrated how Burk wrapped her arm around his neck. He said he was able to breathe but his neck hurt when he was trying to pry her arm off him, according to the report.

A juvenile witness described the altercation the same way the victims described it. He said he continuously tried to help the adult victim get the child out of Burke’s grasp. The deputy’s investigation of the scene revealed a physical disturbance had taken place. A trash can was knocked over and a computer was in pieces on the kitchen floor, the report said.

When asked about the altercation, Burke said she was choked. She was unable to provide any details and the deputy did not observe any injuries on her.
