High visibility enforcement to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office’s Traffic Unit will be conducting High Visibility Enforcement Details with the goal of improving pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The sheriff’s office will conduct the operation as part of a partnership with the University of North Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation for FDOT’s Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow campaign.

The patrols will take place in the area of S Pine Avenue and S U.S. Hwy. 27/441, from SE 17th Street to SE 80th Street. These areas have seen an increase in traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.

The enforcement will continue until Friday, May 15. Deputies will be concentrating more on educating the public about traffic laws during this enforcement to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. But violations may result in warnings or citations, depending on the circumstances.

The sheriff’s office’s traffic unit would like residents to remember several things while they are on the roadways:

  • Drivers should obey speed limits, never drive impaired and always watch
    for bicyclists and pedestrians;
  • Bicyclists should ride in the direction of traffic and use lights
    when riding at night; and
  • Pedestrians should cross roadways in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals and make sure they are visible to drivers when walking at night.
