Tri-county COVID-19 cases in long-term care facilities low compared to rest of Florida

The number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in long-term care facilities in the tri-county area is relatively low compared to other areas in the Sunshine State.

As of Wednesday morning, there were 12 cases of the potentially deadly virus among residents and/or staff members of those types of facilities, which are prevalent in and around The Villages. The cases in those facilities broken down by county are five in Sumter, four in Marion and three in Lake. The names of the facilities where those people have tested positive haven’t been released by the Florida Department of Health.

In contrast, the counties that surround the local area have a total of 105 people suffering from the virus who are connected to long-term care facilities. That breaks down as Polk (23), Volusia (21), Alachua (18), Seminole (18), Orange (16), Osceola (3), Putnam (2), Pasco (2), Citrus (1) and Levy (1).

Dade County leads the way with 237 cases, or 19 percent of the 1,222 cases that have so far been reported in those long-term care facilities. The other counties with the most cases are Broward (117, 10 percent), Palm Beach (101, 8 percent), Suwanee (67, 5 percent), Leon (63, 5 percent) and Clay (61, 5 percent).
