Ocala man charged with smothering woman who wanted to go out

Gary Lorenzo Robinson

An Ocala man was arrested recently on a domestic battery charge, two days after he reportedly threw a woman onto a bed and placed a pillow over her face.

The victim told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that Gary Lorenzo Robinson, 35, received a phone call recently that upset her. She said instead of yelling at Robinson, she told him she was going to go out and enjoy herself, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said she had just gotten out of the shower when Robinson pushed her onto the bed. She said he placed both hands around her neck and squeezed. The victim said Robinson then released her neck and placed a pillow over her face and said, “You’re not going anywhere,” the report said.

The victim said the incident was brief and that her breathing was not impaired while being choked, but she felt the pressure of Robinson’s grip on the sides of her neck. She said during the altercation, which happened in the bedroom, Robinson took her cell phone and slammed it to the ground, breaking it and leaving her unable to call for help, according to the report.

The victim said Robinson left the residence and got into his vehicle. She said she asked Robinson if she could borrow his phone, but he refused and said he was calling law enforcement. The victim said she got into the passenger seat of the car and grabbed Robinson’s phone, and Robinson pulled back one of her fingers and she released the phone, the report said.

The victim said she did punch Robinson while they were in the vehicle and she tried to remove the keys from the ignition when he was backing out of the driveway. She said she got out of the vehicle on her own accord and borrowed a passerby’s phone to contact law enforcement, according to the report.

Robinson was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released on $1,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on May 13.
