12th Lake County resident dies of COVD-19 as Marion County cases jump to 175

A 12th Lake County resident has died from the Coronavirus as the number of cases in the tri-county area jumped to 583 – an increase of 15 in a 24-hour period.

The latest victim was identified Thursday as a 77-year-old man whose case was identified on April 6. He hadn’t traveled recently, nor had he been in contact with anyone else suffering from the virus. The exact area where he lived in Lake County wasn’t included in the most recent Florida Department of Health report.

Marion County saw a jump of 10 cases in a 24-hour period to 175 on Thursday morning. Of those, the overwhelming majority – 125 – are in Ocala, with another 21 reported in Summerfield. The Marion County patients have been identified as 75 men, 97 women and three non-residents. They range in age from 1 to 98. There have been four deaths and 26 people have been treated in area hospitals.

The most recent COVID-19 cases in Marion County include:

  • A 1-year-old boy from Ocala;
  • A 30-year-old woman from Summerfield;
  • A 45-year-old male from Ocala;
  • A 50-year-old woman from Ocala;
  • A 55-year-old man from Ocala;
  • A 67-year-old woman from Ocala;
  • A 71-year-old woman from Dunnellon;
  • An 81-year-old man from Ocala;
  • An 83-year-old woman from Belleview; and
  • An 88-year-old woman from Belleview.

So far, 4,467 COVID-19 tests have been given in Marion County. Of those, 4,173 were negative. The county’s positive test rate is 3.9 percent, compared with Florida’s rate of 8.8 percent.

Sumter County is now reporting 181 cases, an increase of five from Wednesday to Thursday. Of those, 120 are men, 60 are women and one is a non-resident. They range in age from 17 to 97. There have been 13 deaths and 40 people have been hospitalized.
Lake County’s number of cases – 227 – remained the same from Wednesday to Thursday.

Of those patients, 105 are men, 110 are women, 12 are non-residents and they range in age from 1 to 86. There have been 12 deaths and 61 patients have required some form of hospital care.

All told, Florida is reporting 33,690 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 497 cases from Wednesday to Thursday. Among the current cases, 32,801 are Sunshine State residents. There have been 1,268 deaths and 5,589 people have been hospitalized.
