On Top of the World man charged with vandalizing home and sign with metal stick

Jerry Michael Krall

An Ocala man gave a false name while being arrested Monday morning for allegedly damaging a home and a sign with a metal stick in the On Top of the World retirement community.

Jerry Michael Krall, 49, of 9662 SW 93rd Loop, was charged with two counts of criminal mischief with damage between $200 and $1,000 and one count of giving a false ID to law enforcement.

One of Krall’s neighbors in the community told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that he was awakened by someone banging on his front door. The victim opened his door and found Krall, who was asking about a newspaper. The victim said Krall reached behind his back and pulled out a 2-foot-long metal object, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said he closed the door and Krall damaged the screen on his screened garage door, then tore a palm tree decal off the door and ripped it in half. The damage was estimated at $15, the report said.

While the deputy was looking for Krall, another community resident contacted the sheriff’s office and said he observed Krall striking a sign with a long metal object, causing scratching and removing part of the sign’s yellow reflective covering. The witness said he grabbed his own stick and ordered Krall to leave, according to the report.

The general manager for the On Top of the World subdivision confirmed the sign was on their property and wanted to pursue charges. The GM estimated it would cost $200 to replace the sign, the report said.

Both the victim witness provided similar descriptions for Krall, who was found walking off the golf course in the 9200 block of SW 94th Street. After being detained, Krall told a deputy his name was “Jay Crall.” The victim and witness positively identified Krall as the person they observed, according to the report.

Krall later identified himself as Jerry Vincent Michael. When a computer search showed no match, the deputy asked him again and he correctly identified himself. Krall said he didn’t damage any property, never had a metal object and that someone chased him with a stick, the report said.

Krall was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was being held Tuesday on $1,500 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on July 8.
