Recently released Ocklawaha man caught with weed during traffic stop

Shawn Allen Benson

An Ocklawaha man who recently spent eight months in jail was arrested again Tuesday after being caught with marijuana during a traffic stop.

Shawn Allen Benson, 26, of 12250 SE 138th Ave., was charged with possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and a pair of probation violations. In March, Benson completed an eight-month stint in the Marion County Jail for armed burglary and grand theft, according to jail records.

Benson was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by a Marion County sheriff’s deputy in the area of 3200 SE 73rd Street in Ocala. He was detained and the vehicle was searched after deputies detected the odor of marijuana, according to the sheriff’s office report.

After searching Benson’s clothes, a deputy asked Benson if he had anything in his shoes, and he replied, “just a little weed.” Benson removed his shoes and pulled out a small plastic bag containing a green leafy substance and a brown cigar wrapper containing a green leafy substance. The substance field-tested positive for the presence of THC, the report said.

Benson refused to speak after being read his Miranda rights. He’s being held without bond and will appear in Marion County Court on June 8 for the probation violations and July 8 for the drug charge.
