Sumter County resident dies of COVID-19 as another prison staffer tests positive

A 15th Sumter County resident has succumbed to the Coronavirus and another staff member at a local state prison has tested positive for the illness.

The latest victim was described as a 61-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with someone else suffering from the virus. His case was first identified on April 26 and it’s unclear where he lived in Sumter County, as that specific information wasn’t released by the Florida Department of Health.

Overall, Sumter County is reporting a total of 244 COVID-19 cases, with 116 of those being at the Sumter Correctional Institution, where a 15th staff member has tested positive. A total of 101 inmates have been identified with the Coronavirus and three others are awaiting test results. Three prisoners also are in medical isolation and another 910 are in medical quarantine.

Sumter County’s cases are divided among 175 men, 66 women and three non-residents. A total of 42 residents have required some form of hospital care while battling the virus.

Marion County now has 213 COVID-19 cases divided among 91 men, 117 women and five non-residents. There have been five deaths and 30 people have been hospitalized.

A total of 150 cases have been identified in Ocala. Others in Marion County have been reported in Summerfield (26), Dunnellon (9), Citra (7), Belleview (6), Ocklawaha (4), Anthony (3), Reddick (2), Silver Springs (1) and The Villages (1).

Lake County is reporting 246 cases among 114 men, 119 women and 12 non-residents. There have been 14 deaths and 66 people have been hospitalized.

All told, Florida is reporting 41,923 cases, with 40,804 of those being among residents. There have been 1,779 deaths and 7,418 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
